A dryer is a fan with a heater attached. That single sentence explains most of what goes wrong with them. Restrict the exhaust and the machine will either run the heater into its thermal cut-off and go cold, or tumble away happily and hand you back damp laundry an hour later.
What catches people out is that both of those look exactly like a failed heating element, and replacing the element without clearing the restriction buys you the same failure again in a few weeks.
Why Chicago is worse than average for this
The city is built in masonry, and the laundry is usually below grade. That combination produces the worst case for dryer venting: a long horizontal run through brick, from the middle of a basement out to whichever wall was nearest, with two or three elbows in it. Every elbow costs the equivalent of several extra feet of duct.
Then add the things we find on top of that:
- •A crushed foil transition hose behind the machine, squashed flat when the dryer was pushed back into place.
- •A termination flap on the outside wall that has been painted shut, or packed with lint and nesting material.
- •Lint compacted into a solid plug at the first bend, where the airflow slows and drops its load.
Put those together and the airflow is a fraction of what the appliance was designed around, while the heater works perfectly.
The ten-minute test, before you call anyone
Set a timed dry for ten minutes, then go round to the gangway or the alley side and hold your palm in front of the exhaust hood.
- •A firm, warm stream that pushes the damper wide open — the duct is doing its job, and the fault really is inside the dryer.
- •A faint or barely warm breath while the dryer cabinet is hot — the duct is choked somewhere between the machine and that hood. The dryer itself is fine.
Check the damper too: it should swing freely, with no paint sealing it, no lint mat behind it and, in January, no ice holding it shut. Clearing that is sometimes the whole job.
The early warning nobody acts on
A dryer that used to finish in forty-five minutes and now needs two runs has already lost most of its airflow. Nothing has failed yet — which is exactly the point at which the cheap fix is still available. Once the restriction has been cooking the heater for a few months, the thermal cut-off goes, and a cut-off is a one-time device.
Replace it without clearing the run and you will be replacing it again. Eventually the element goes too.
When it genuinely is a part
Once airflow is confirmed good, the real list is short:
- •Heating element on an electric dryer, or the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils on a gas one. Chicago runs heavily on natural gas, so gas dryers are a larger share of our work here than they would be in a lot of cities.
- •Thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat, which are safety devices that open when the machine overheats. They are cheap. They are also a symptom, not a cause.
- •Cycling thermostat or thermistor, which is how the machine regulates temperature.
- •Timer or control board, last, because it is the least likely.
A dryer that tumbles but never calls for heat at all, on a machine with good airflow, points at the control side. A dryer that heats and then cuts out points at airflow almost every time.
Ventless condensing dryers
Common in Chicago condo conversions and vintage apartment buildings that cannot run a duct through a hundred-year-old wall. They fail differently: there is no vent to block, but there is a condenser block and a secondary lint path that both need cleaning far more often than owners expect. Performance drops off long before anything actually breaks, and the fix is usually maintenance rather than a part.
What we do on the visit
We measure airflow rather than guess at it, brush the full run from machine to wall cap, check the transition hose and the termination, and only then look at components. If the run is genuinely longer or more convoluted than the appliance is rated for, we say so plainly — that is a duct problem, and no thermal fuse will solve it.
Gas equipment is isolated at the shut-off before anything is disconnected, and every joint we break is leak-tested before the dryer goes back into service.
